Stubborn Belly Fat

Can Whole Body Vibration reduce or totally eradicate your stubborn belly fat?

I wish WBV had magically vibrated-off my few pounds of stubborn belly fat.  But no.

What has worked for me is Carnitine.

Belly Fat – Acetyl-L-Carnitine

A lot of fitness fanatics, take large doses of Acetyl-L-Carnitine… 20grams or more, per day.carnitine

  • BECAUSE IT WORKS.
  • But for significant excess fat, not just a few pounds of stubborn belly fat, ALCAR is not a solution.  Instead, look into supplementing with iodine, increasing leptin sensitivity, thyroid issues, general endocrine issues.

For me, a mere 5grams per day makes a BIG difference.  I’m talking 6-pack REVEALED, where before my “abs” were buried under a layer of this stubborn blubber.

Belly Fat – Lipoic Acid

Along with the ALCAR, I take Reduced Alpha Lipoic Acid, “R-ALA”.lipoic-acid

  • This is a typical recommendation to reduce possible “ROS” reactive oxygen species caused by ingesting unnatural amounts of carnitine.  An 8oz steak has around 200mg of L-Carnitine.
  • I take 100mg of R-ALA, per 2.5 grams of ALCAR.

I DON’T think Whole Body Vibration has much effect on stubborn belly fat.

I DO think Whole Body Vibration is an extremely motivational experience.  As I’ve said before, The Whole Body Vibrator “makes you feel freaking GREAT.”  This is externally FORCED motivation.

  • WBV probably won’t cause weight loss, directly.
  • WBV will help you to feel motivated to take control of your life.  You’ll want to keep feeling this good.  That’s motivation, not “will power”.  Will power doesn’t work.

The Whole Body Vibrator can be an investment in motivation.

MitoQ

MitoQ Works Better When…

So you bought a bottle infused with this fancy molecule called MitoQ…  But will it work?

You want to get the best results possible, so prepare your skin to absorb this expensive stuff: Wash With Charcoal Powder

MitoQDon’t just wash and lightly scrub your skin with a towel before rubbing in charcoal-bulletproofthis expensive goo.  First use charcoal powder, to pull away dirt, oils, and dead skin that’s otherwise going to stand in the way between your live skin cells and the magic of MitoQ.

—Lightly scrub a capsule-full of coconut charcoal over your face, with just enough water involved to make the charcoal stick
—Let the damp charcoal sludge dry out.
—Wash with a towel and soapy, warm water.
—When the skin is dry, massage-in a generous blob of charcoal-powderthis fancy yellowish goo called “MitoQ”.

I figure it’s best to apply this stuff after a shower in the evening.  Then perhaps re-apply (without washing the skin again) right before bed.  Charcoal scrub >> shower >> MitoQ.

What is MitoQ?

Mitoq_structureHere’s a quick summary, from this article at joshmitteldorf.scienceblog.com

At the Second SENS conference in 2004, I sidled up to an expert whom I respected and asked, “What’s the optimal dose of CoQ10?”  He laughed and asked, in reply, “How much can you afford?”

But eating ubiquinone doesn’t work very well.  It is poorly absorbed in the digestive tract (the molecular variant called ubiquinol is supposed to mitigate this problem), little of it makes it into the blood stream, less into the cells, and a pittance to the mitochondria where it is needed.

…Targeting worked amazingly well, with virtually all of the Mito-Q molecules finding their way to the mitochondria. This means that very low doses can result in very high effectiveness.

Anything with a positive charge is drawn into the mitochondria, and if it’s not a proton, it won’t be pumped right back out again.  Murphy and Smith were inspired to create a molecule that combined ubiquinone at one end with a chemical tugboat at the other [this is MitoQ]…  The chemical “tugboat”, called TPP for tri-phenyl phosphonium, had been developed 25 years earlier in the Moscow State University lab of Vladimir Skulachev.

Skulachev, who had pioneered the early work on the right-hand part of the molecule, picked up this thread early on, and has sponsored much of the research that has demonstrated the rejuvenating potential of the molecule.  The molecular tugboat is known as a “Skulachev ion”, and a similar molecule to MitoQ has been dubbed “SkQ” and explored in Russian experiments.

Last year, a New Zealand company completed licensing requirements and created a manufacturing facility, and MitoQ is now available by order on the Internet for delivery worldwide.  The product was first announced at the A4M annual showcase meeting in November.  A year earlier, Skulachev’s company had begun to sell SkQ as eyedrops, available thus far only in Russia.  Skulachev’s group has long-term plans to develop the product for other uses as well, and to obtain licensing in Europe and America.

Skulachev is using a variant of the Mito-Q molecule based on plastoquinone rather than ubiquinone.  Plastoquinone is the equivalent of ubiquinone in green plants, and Skulachev reports that there is a wider range of effective dosage for plastoquinone compared to ubiquinone.  Scientists at MitoQ disagree that plastoquinone is better.

How can Whole Body Vibration possibly keep me looking younger?

More than aging skin, an “old face” is caused by bone erosion. The structure of your face changes as bone-density declines with age, and your skull structure basically erodes.

Whole body vibration increases bone density. Fact. That’s why USSR and USSA (formerly “USA”) astronauts have used WBV for decades now.

If increasing and maintaining bone density into old age, also prevents bone erosion, then WBV is a smart investment.the whole body vibrator

I’m no doctor, but this seems very reasonable. Cause-and-effect. But that’s a far-sighted goal to have, and not what motivates anyone to spend minutes every day standing on a vibration platform.

We do it because it feels freaking great.

kenrico-patch

Foot Pads? “Kenrico” Detox.

Ever heard of a “foot pad” detox? kenrico-gold
Try it.  Put it on before you go to bed.  Most likely, you WILL sleep deeper, and feel better than usual in the morning.

This is not about “reflexology” or traditional Chinese medicine.  It just works.

Kenrico “Gold” is the foot pad I use.  Kenrico makes many recipes of “detox pads” or “sap sheets”, but this one has the greatest effect in my experience.

This foot pad’s primary ingredients are a mineral called “tourmaline”, and vinegar.  It’s powder in a “gold” pouch.  One side is foil, and the other side (that contacts your foot) is basically medical gauze.  It comes with a separate medical-grade adhesive patch, and looks like this when applied:
kenrico-patchHere are the ingredients, ordered by weight:
Tourmaline 6.00 grams
Wood Vinegar 1.00 grams, Bamboo Vinegar 0.60 grams
Sporopollenin 0.44 grams — see Kenrico’s claims on sporopollenin
Vegetable fiber 0.20 grams Dextrin 0.10 grams
Chitosan (organic mushroom chitosan) 0.04 grams
Loquat Leaf 0.04 grams
Houttuynia Cordata 0.04 grams
Vitamin C 0.04 grams

Your feet aren’t sweating while you sleep; but by the time you wake up, the dry powder in the pad will have turned to a gooey, sticky brown paste (trapped in the pouch, not getting on your sheets).  It’s soaked a small amount of water out of the soles of your feet.  If there is a real “detox” effect, that’s at least partly how it happens.

  • I don’t know how it works.
  • I suspect that the effect is mostly from the very finely powdered Tourmaline, which you will smell when you open the plastic package.  Tourmaline is discussed in detail at “Global Healing Center” which makes above-top-tier products, even though there are some very specific and hardly provable claims.
  • I don’t get into specific claims on what tourmaline can do.  When I first tried this foot pad several years ago, It had an extremely relaxing effect on me, first by just smelling it, and then much more during sleep and when I woke up.  So I looked into what was in it:  Tourmaline.  Not a placebo.
  • The “silver” pad and other flavors, did less, or nothing for me.

Just try it.  It’s like 25-bucks on amazon.com for a pack of 10 pairs.

pregnenolone

Pregnenolone Serenity

When I was stressed and depleted:

  • Whole Body Vibration reminded me how good “normal” used to feel.
  • Later, I discovered pregnenolone; and it restored my body’s ability to stay that way, all day long, every day.  Now “normal” feels better than ever.

Healing is a process of discovery.  The body heals itself, once you feed it what it needs.

“Pregnenolone” isn’t related to “pregnancy” 🙂

  • Pregnenolone is the building block from which all other steroid hormones are made.
  • Endogenously, pregnenolone is built from cholesterol.

Pregnenolone depletion, “pregnenolone steal“, “adrenal fatiguecan be synonymous with Sympathetic Nervous System Dominance or “Sympathetic Dominance”.  It’s an effect of:

  • sustained stress, over years or decades
  • carbohydrate-rich diet + circadian rhythm destruction = hormonal disaster
  • mineral deficiencies make this worse: iodine, magnesium, zinc, for example

Common symptoms:

  • “running on adrenaline”
  • lethargy, depression, light-headed or brain-fog a few hours after eating
  • waking up throughout the night: cortisol rhythm out-of-sync, trying to raise your blood-sugar at night.  This is usually because you’ve eaten too much sugar (too many carbs) in one sitting recently (in the previous day or two) which set off a blood-glucose roller-coaster that takes days to slow down.
  • Blood-sugar-high is followed by blood-sugar-low.  That’s the roller-coaster ride often associated with sympathetic dominance.  (Eating a large, high protein, high fat breakfast (zero carbs), can help reset your circadian cycles faster.   No lunch.  Just a fairly balanced dinner with minimal carbs.)
  • sometimes chronic stress is followed by a “bloated belly” as the result of sympathetic dominance impairing peristalsis, and causing SIBO; resulting in excess gut permeability or “leaky gut“, and then often autoimmune reactions to eating certain foods.  In this case, relaxation is the key to restoring healthy movement of the intestines, and gradually a healed gut, and a flat belly.

What Whole Body Vibration can do for you if you’re SNS-dominant, in need of forced relaxation:

  • Allow you to feel energy you haven’t felt in years.  Exhilarating energy, while perfectly calm.
  • It can be as thoroughly relaxing as a professional full-body massage; except you can do it every day, without going bankrupt.

What WBV can’t do is bring you to the next level of a serene “recharging” exhaustion.

  • In this case pregnenolone can do what The Whole Body Vibrator can’t.
  • They reinforce and complement each other.

Hormonal deficiencies can make you feel weak, depressed, “running on adrenaline”,

  • Restoring those hormones will allow you to feel exhausted in a good way, like you’re finally “recharging”

Enable your body to turn off SNS-Dominance, to allow the Para-Sympathetic nervous system to take over, as it should, every day.  This is a healthy cycle.  When this happens, you’ll understand what recharging exhaustion feels like:

  • It’s an effortless silence of mind.
  • It’s a calm body, not weak, not sleepy, just completely at rest.
  • You might feel like you’ve just walked down from a volcano on Bali, staring at the beach… Exhausted, serene, at peace.  In paradise.  But you’re just at home, in the land of the free and the brave (or the enslaved and the cowardly, these days)
  • But the stresses of daily life won’t matter.  Your body is at peace.  You need this.

Try pregnenolone.  100mg capsules are common.

pregnenolone

  • At first, you may “feel kind of invincible” with only 100mg, taken in the morning, on an empty stomach.
  • Later, it may take 500mg or a whole gram of Pregnenolone to make you feel so good.
  • I recommend the smallest dose that helps relieve SNS-Dominance symptoms.  It’s an n=1 experiment.

“Pregnenolone Steal” is a complex phenomenon that can be caused by one or more of a doze or so metabolic issues.  Taking pregnenolone, for a sufficient time, can help relieve these symptoms long enough for your body to recover, and then no longer need exogenous support to feel great every day.

  • Like any serious medical problem, endocrine-system problems may require a medical doctor who is educated in health (not just disease management) and lots of blood analysis.
  • Or, perhaps experimenting on your own with supplementing all the right minerals may be all you need.

Pregnenolone could heal you.  the whole body vibrator

The Whole Body Vibrator can restore your motivation to get healed, by reminding you how good it is to feel good.

Hypothyroid Energy Boost

A primary hypothyroid symptom is lethargy, or merely a general lack of energy compared to how you felt as a kid.  It’s common, but it’s not natural to us.  Never mind your age.  We should all be bursting with energy.

Do you get cold feet?  Chilled after eating?  Often feel “it’s too cold” when others are comfortable?  Try these supplements:

Nascent Iodine

  • nascent iodine Basically “nascent” iodine is colloidal or “nano” iodine.  It’s more bioavailable than other “bound” forms.
  • “Lugol’s Iodine” is potassium iodide.  It’s less available to be converted into thyroid hormones.
  • Many people suffer from irritability after applying even 1 drop of Lugol’s to their skin, or drinking 1 drop of Lugol’s in water.  Taking selenium with Lugol’s will reduce that effect.
  • But “nascent” iodine is less likely to cause irritability.  Sufficient selenium is still important, when supplementing iodine.

Seleniumselenium-jarrow

  • An important supporting supplement (wikipedia: selenocysteine)
  • Selenium deficiency can increase the hypothyroid effects of iodine deficiency.
  • Selenium might be called “the happy mineral”, perhaps because of its synergistic boost to thyroid function, or its role in building glutathione peroxidase.
  • For more info on selenium, visit stopthethyroidmadness.com

Adrenal Cortex Extractadrenal-cortex

  • This will warm your feet up.  Regularly taking this supplement isn’t a cure for hypothyroidism, but it helps.
  • “Adrenal cortex” is more concentrated than a regular dessicated adrenal tablet of the entire bovine adrenal gland.  It’s a better value.
  • If adrenal cortex causes irritability, you’re deficient in selenium.

Sardinesbrisling-sardines

  • A can of these low-toxin “brisling sardines” can have nearly the same energy-boost effect as one “dropper full” of the nascent iodine above.  This is probably due to a similar effective dose of bioavailable iodine from these tasty little fishes.
  • Don’t buy sardines in “tomato” or “mustard” sauce.  These are common allergens, for people with thyroid issues.  If your gut is sensitive to these, hypothyroid symptoms can cascade.
  • Beware of high-toxin canned fish like King Mackerel.  Brisling sardines, caught in the North Atlantic (closer to Norway than the US coast), are the only canned food I recommend.

The Whole Body Vibratorthe whle body vibrator

  • Not just a sales-pitch.  A WBV session really can release the same sort of explosion of energy that a dose of nascent iodine can do for a hypothyroid sufferer.
  • I don’t comprehend how WBV does this.  Medical studies would be required to make any educated guess.  But it works.
jarrow-hyaluronic-acid

Skin Health – Top 3 Supplements

What makes a supplement good for your skin?  HYDRATION EFFECT.

How do you know if a supplement is working?  HYDRATION EFFECT.
  • Take a supplement you expect to improve skin hydration.
  • If your skin feels hydrated (especially smooth) within 1 to 12 hours, then it’s working.
  • Consistent hydration effect.  Use after use; day after day.  That’s what these do:
1.  Hyaluronic Acid  (wikipedia, Hyaluronan)jarrow-hyaluronic-acid
  • Commonly prescribed for joint pains – because it works nearly instantly for systemic joint lubrication (relieving tendonosis pain, for example).
  • But it’s also the best skin hydrating supplement I’ve found.  I experience a surge of skin hydration within 2 hours of taking a typical dose of 100mg.
  • Be careful with a topical, liquid form.  Hyaluronic acid can dry your skin out, if it’s too concentrated when applied directly onto your skin.

2. Bioavailable Silica (wikipedia, Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid)jarrow-silica-liquid
  • I prefer the liquid form.  Use topically; mixed in water; or fit 25-ish drops into an empty 00-size capsule.
  • I usually “man mix it” with some San Pellegrino or Gerolsteiner mineral water, and squeeze 20 to 30 drops from the Jarrow bottle. Tastes bad on its own, but adds a pleasant flavor when mixed with carbonated water.jarrow-silica-capsles
  • “Horsetail” supplements contain silica, but not a magically “active” form as in JarroSil or BioSil.  You won’t feel a massive skin hydrating effect from horsetail.

3.  Salt.  Yes, salt…
  • Too much salt will dehydrate you.  But most people are salt-ancientdeficient in REAL SALT:  Ancient mineral salt.
  • Ever get chapped lips?  9 times out of 10, that’s due to salt deficiency.  Gobble a 1/2 teaspoon of good salt, in water, and chapped lips disappear.
  • I usually buy in bulk from The Spice Lab.
  • I prefer ancient salt, rather than sea salt.  Oceans are too polluted.
  • Beware of imitation salt.  You don’t want colored sodium-chloride.  You want ancient crystal salt from underneath mountains or dead seas.
  • Most often “Himalayan salt” is from Pakistan.  Nothing wrong with that.

collagen

WHAT ELSE? Collagen.  From grass-fed cows.  It’s actually scrubbed from the inside of cowhide, oddly enough.  It’s cow skin, basically.

  • Mix the powder in hot water (collagen is heat stable).  Drink.  To improve the taste, you might add cinnamon powder, and even Xylitol (from birch bark).
  • It’s commonly claimed that collagen needs Vitamin-C to be utilized.
  • Try this:  2 tablespoons of collagen powder (in warm water), plus 2-to-4 grams ascorbic acid (in capsules), on an empty stomach in the morning, or before bed.

MSM (wikipedia, Methylsulfonylmethane)Jarrow MSM

  • Helps retain skin hydration.
  • Probably the most well-known skin & joint supplement.
  • Basically it’s a secondary supplement, to improve the effects of the top three above.

TOPICAL? Avocado oil.

    • Has a long-lasting hydrating / healing / smoothing-out wrinkles effect.
    • Absorbs very well into skin – better than olive oil.  Coconut oil, for example, absorbs very poorly.
    • I use an organic, unrefined avocado oil from Mountain Rose Herbs (often sold out).

Mercola’s Power Plate – Overpriced & Oversold

power-plate2Mercola.com sells a whole body vibration machine called “Power Plate,” which may be top of the line in bells and whistles; but basically these useless extras are adding several thousand dollars to the price, and no real benefit.

Dr. Mercola is a wonderful wizard of getting beneficial nutrition information out to a large audience — helping people.  That’s admirable.  But selling overpriced, gimmicky products like the “Power Plate” is not.

Mercola’s Claims:

Weight loss: “How Whole Body Vibrational Training Tackles ‘Belly’ or Abdominal Fat”
  • Mercola.com cites “A recent human study of 79 obese adults” as evidence that this claim is worth betting your money on.  That may be true; but medical “studies” are simply not reliable.
Cellulite: “Is Acceleration Training the Newest Way to Help Beat Cellulite?”
  • Mercola.com cites “a 2004 German study” as evidence that this claim is pure veritas.
Vibration:  “Power Plate’s Patented 2-Motor Systems Truly Delivers a 3-D Workout”
  • The “tri-planar” idea is purely marketing.  The work that causes WBV-effects is done on your body in the vertical direction, not in either horizontal direction.
Machine: “Power Plate’s Patented 2-Motor Systems Truly Delivers a 3-D Workout”
  •  BUT WHAT IS A “3-D workout”?!!!
  • Okay, the Power Plate vibrates in 3 dimensions.  In that context, The Whole Body Vibrator vibrates in 2 dimensions…  Does this matter at all?
  • No, it’s vertical vibration that matters.  If vertical vibration were removed, leaving only horizontal movements of the plate, you’d feel next-to-nothing.  No affect on fluid circulation,  no affect on muscle contractions, etc.  That’s not WBV.  Horizontal vibrations are not important.
Warranty: “With Power Plate, you Know they’ll be there”
  • Nobody knows the future.  This is insulting to anyone shopping for a fair value.

… Sensational claims like these are how to “oversell” a vibration machine.  Shady promises; sexy photos, and an inflated price.

WHY IS THE POWER PLATE SO EXPENSIVE?

  • Because it’s sold by a large company, which has large marketing costs that must be covered by higher prices; and many people to pay, to keep Mercola.com operating.
  • The “Power Plate” has been dressed up with every fancy gimmick to appeal to a mass audience.

DOES THE WHOLE BODY VIBRATOR DO BASICALLY WHAT THE POWER PLATE DOES?
Yes.  But also…

  • Weighing about 50 pounds, the Whole Body Vibrator can be moved easily.   The lightest version of the Power Plate is 125 pounds.  Not fun to move around.
  • The Whole Body Vibrator requires NO ASSEMBLY AT ALL. Open the box, unwrap it, plug it in, push a button to start: Pure Enjoyment.

WBV IS RELAXING, but what if your machine will not stay on longer that 60 seconds?!

  • the Power Plate will NOT work for longer than 30 or 60 seconds at a time.
  • This was probably done in order to meet a misguided requirement for “certification” by “MDD” i.e., European Medical Device Directive.  See Vibration Safety.
  • The Whole Body Vibrator does not claim any medical benefit.  It is not certified.  Relaxation is a subjective claim; but sure enough, when you’re relaxed, you don’t want that serene feeling to SHUT DOWN every 60 seconds – that might turn your relaxation into frustration.

Mercola & the Power Plate: Sensational claims & a sensationally high price.whole body vibration machine 1

The Whole Body Vibrator: Factual claims & a reasonable price.

The Whole Body Vibrator is all business, no BS.

ISO-2631

Vibration Safety

There’s an International Standards Organization chart (from ISO-2631) dealing with vibration safety in chronic exposure, but it does not specify displacement:
ISO-2631Is it simply a bureaucratic error, that this chart does not explicitly or implicitly refer to a displacement?  Read below to understand why it is true that without displacement, this chart is entirely useless.

Safety is about a machine’s impact (or “impulse“) on you.

With very little movement of its stainless steel platform, The Whole Body Vibrator has much less “impact” on your body than machines that are often compared to WBV, where safety is concerned:

  • riding on an old, bumpy train every day, while sitting in a seat without padding
  • operating a jack hammer
  • driving a tractor without a comfortable, isolated, padded seat… etc…

Imagine standing in an elevator.  You feel the acceleration when it starts.  That’s work being done on you; but the acceleration is very low, so you don’t feel much “impact”.

Work  =  Force  x  Distance

An elevator accelerates slowly (the force on you is low), but you move very far, so the elevator does a lot of work on your body.  But the total work done to lift you up a floor or more, is elapsed over a long period of time.  Thus the “impact” is very low:

Work done, in a short period of time, is a high impact.
The same work done, in a long period of time, is a low impact.

The Whole Body Vibrator, puts more force on you than an elevator, but its stainless steel platform moves only a very small distance.  Thus a Linear WBV machine does relatively little work on your body.

However, this little bit of work is done in a very short period of time — making a “high impact” possible.  But the fact remains that the distance is very small, and the force is carefully designed so that the total impact on you is not comparable to a jack hammer or sitting on a steam-punk locomotive without a padded seat.

DISPLACEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT
Imagine standing on a WBV machine that was somehow built to move up 1 foot and down 1 foot, at 30Hz (30 times per second , the same as in the Whole Body Vibrator).  You wouldn’t need to know what “acceleration” is for this 1-foot monster machine.  Just seeing it in motion you’d understand that it’s very dangerous.  It moves very fast, to travel back and forth 30 times per second.

The Whole Body Vibrator’s platform doesn’t have to move as fast, to travel a tiny distance 30 times per second.   It moves less than 0.05″ inches up and 0.05″ down.  With that very low displacement it would take a much higher acceleration to have a harmful affect.  This is described by the graphic of “G’s” on the Performance Data page.

THE WHOLE BODY VIBRATOR IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE UNDER 100 POUNDS
With all that said, The Whole Body Vibrator could be dangerous for a person weighing less than 100 pounds:

  • If you weigh under 100 pounds, the acceleration can exceed the suggested 7 G’s “comfort limit”.
  • You are responsible for discerning whether an impact is detrimentally “jarring” on your body, as described in the “G’s” graphic on the Performance Data page.
  • “Ask your doctor” is a disclaimer here.  But that may not be worth your time.  Most doctor’s know very little about health.

A WELL DESIGNED WBV MACHINE ISN’T COMPARABLE TO DANGEROUS POWER TOOLS
Holding a jack hammer, riding on a tractor, bumpy train, etc.  Vibration from these machines means a significant distance, and they move very fast.  That combination has a “jarring” affect on the body, and recurring exposure to that sort of vibration is dangerous.

The Relationship Between Skin and Facial Bone Structure

Anti-aging:

Can Whole Body Vibration reduce facial bone-loss?

Age –> Bone Loss –> Skin just looks different, no matter how well maintained.
Thus, bone maintenance is a priority for longevity.

A summary of this relationship, from Dr. Robert Shaw Jr., chief resident in plastic surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center:
The original thought was that skin goes through changes, such as a loss of elasticity and fat, so the primary approach to facial rejuvenation was skin tightening procedures,” Shaw said. “But a lot of faces never looked like they did when they were younger. Patients bring in pictures and say they want to go back to that look, but they can never really go back to that look just by tightening their skin alone. If there are changes to those underlying structures it’s going to change the appearance of how the skin looks.
… They then created three-dimensional reconstructions of the scans, which they used to take detailed measurements of the facial bone structure. … With age, the scans showed that the bones that make up the eye sockets recede, enlarging the sockets. A few less millimeters of bone for the soft tissues of the face to hold on to adds to the appearance of excess or droopy skin around the eyes, Shaw said.”

Further study on the relationship between skin aging & bone loss:
PubMed publication, Overview of current thoughts on facial volume and aging
The aging process has also been shown to affect the facial bones. Multiple studies suggest that the bony aging of the orbit and midface is a process primarily of contraction and morphologic change. This loss of bony volume and projection may contribute to the aged appearance.

PubMed: Facial bone density, effects of aging…

Studies like this imply that maintaining facial bone density (“bone mineral density”) will reduce the appearance of aging on one’s face.  From the publication:

BACKGROUND:  Facial bone aging has recently been described as primarily resulting from volume loss and morphologic changes to the orbit, midface, and mandible.

OBJECTIVE:  The authors demonstrate how the facial skeleton bone mineral density (BMD) changes with age in both men and women and compare these changes to those of the axial skeleton. They also explore the aesthetic implications of such changes in bone density.

CONCLUSIONS:  Our results suggest that the BMD of the face changes with age, similar to the axial skeleton. This change in BMD may contribute to the appearance of the aging face and potentially affect facial rejuvenation procedures.

From wikipedia’s “bone density” page:
Bone density (or bone mineral density) is a medical term normally referring to the amount of mineral matter per square centimeter of bones.[1] Bone density (or BMD) is used in clinical medicine as an indirect indicator of osteoporosis and fracture risk.
